Lessons from COVID-19 #1: Your Heart Chakra Needs More Cowbell


In my days of teaching yoga and chakras, Christopher Walken meme circled the social media of energy healers and yoga practitioners time and again. Heck, I even used it to boost my FB events.


It's taken on a whole new meaning for me in these last weeks of the corona virus scare.


Now, in the days of social distancing, self-isolation, shelter-in-place and other buzzwords that weren't even part of our vocabulary two months ago, I can't help but wonder, what is all this doing to our Heart Chakras, both individually and collectively.


The symptoms and condition of the corona virus are almost entirely heart chakra related. A dry cough, mucus build-up in the lungs, the need for oxygen and ventilators. It's all about the lungs ability to feed the heart with good clean pure oxygen. The heart chakra is about our ability to give and receive, to take-in and give-away, to breathe-in and breathe-out.


The thing is, in any time of wounding and challenge, we are faced with a choice, to either succumb to the wound, or to heal and grow and use the challenge as an opportunity to be more real with ourselves. In this case, this is an opportunity to look yourself in the mirror, take a deep breath, and really REALLY love yourself.


The HEART CHAKRA is all about connection, love, and relationships. If we dig to the real core of the heart chakra, the TRUTH is that we can only love and connect with others as much as we love and connect with ourselves. So, in this time of social-distancing and self-isolation, it is time to get intimate, up-close-and-personal with YOURSELF.

In my own world, when I look in the mirror to love myself, I have to admit to my own vulnerabilities. This week, the particular vulnerability I've been trying to deny is my asthma. (I refuse to use an inhaler).


I've noticed my own breathing has been tighter this last week. I do have a bit of exercise-induced and cat-allergy asthma. But I cannot blame the cats or the long walks for this tightness I feel because those elements haven't changed in my world. I also can't blame my own relationship strains for the density in my lungs. Rather, I believe that my symptoms are a result of empath energies. What has changed is my empath absorption of the worries and fears and anxieties I see in the news and hear in the voices of the people around me.


This means that for me, FOCUSED BREATHING is more important than normal. I have preached this for years, that breath is the most important aspect of yoga and general health and wellness. It is really now time for me to practice what I preach, and encourage everyone I know to notch up this practice by, well, a zillion!


So, if I can put on my Christopher Walken shades and leather jacket and strut onto the SNL stage of COVID-19, I would demand, over and over again,


"You Heart Chakra Needs More Cowbell!...would you BREATHE MORE!...yes...even MORE THAN THAT!"
